Spices -Key points

1-India is known as the home of spices.India has the largest domestic market for spices in the world.

2-India is the world’s largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices; the country produces about 75 of the 109 varieties.

3-Total spices export from India stood at 226,225 tonnes valued at US$ 621.78 in April-June 2016, registering a year-on-year growth of 3 per cent.

4-Country India commands a formidable position in the world spice trade with the spice exports expected to touch US$ 3 billion by 2016-17.

5-Some of the top spices produced in India include pepper, cardamom, chilli, ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, celery, fennel, fenugreek, ajwain, dill seed, garlic, tamarind, clove, and nutmeg among others.

6- The names of major importers of Indian spices in Financial Year (FY) 2015-16 were countries US, China, Vietnam, UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, UK, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and Germany.

7- According to the reports of ‘Spices Board of India’, the total export of spices increased 3 per cent to reach US$ 621.78 billion in April-June 2016.

8-Spices are used in different forms: whole, chopped, ground, roasted, sautéed, fried, and as topping.

1. HALDI (TURMERIC)

* This golden spice is known for its anti-oxidant and antiinflammatory powers.

* Anti-oxidant properties of curcumin may also help to prevent cardiovascular complications among diabetics.

2-ELAICHI (CARDAMON)

* Cardamom stimulates the appetite and enhances digestion.

* It help relieve colic, distension, gas, nausea, vomiting, indigestion and an acid stomach

* Commonly chewed after a meal, it is also used to eradicate bad breath.

3-AMCHUR (DRIED MANGO POWDER)

* It is very much used in chutneys and curries.

* Amchur or dried mango powder boasts high Vitamin A and Vitamin C content.

* It is recommended to pregnant women due to its high iron content and it also reduces acidity-related issues.
